My Slaithwaite

I love my little village of Slaithwaite. It has changed so much in the last few years and I’m so proud to call it the home of Points. It has always been a beautiful place; with a canal running right through the centre, a rich history of textile mills, and with Globe Mill sitting majestically at the heat of the village. The building has been renovated in the last few years and is hopefully due to open this year full of independent shops, an artisan food hall, and office spaces.

There are lots of fantastic shops and cafes to visit, here are a few of my favourite places to go:

Om is Where the Heart is

Where do I start with this wonderful place, Om as it’s affectionately known in the village is expertly run by Alex and Ellie who opened their business just over two years ago. Its a light and modern welcoming space . The food and coffee are to die for with hearty healthy portions. There’s always something different to try on their extensive menu that is influenced from their far flung travels. The staff are welcoming, professional and really can’t do enough for you. And last but definitely not least are the yoga studio’s, I try and go a couple of times a week and it’s made such a difference to my fitness and stress levels. All their yoga teachers are hand picked to suit Om and they are all amazing at what they do. I recommend yoga to most of my Points clients as it’s so good for the body and mind.

Acorn & Pip

Acorn & Pip opened up late last year, and what a great addition to the village. It is a kids toy store offering sustainable, organic, design-led products. It is such a beautiful space where you can go have a browse, pick up some fantastic toys, books or homewares and relax whilst enjoying great coffee and delicious cakes. It’s really child friendly with fun areas set up for kids to play. The owner Lucy is really friendly and knowledgeable and is always happy to help you pick out the perfect gift.

Globe Arts Education

Globe Arts Education and Studios, home to Points, is a creative space for lots of very talented people. It really is great to work in this wonderful place and be inspired by the artists that surround us (too many to list on here, future blog coming soon). We also have Globe Arts Education who run amazing art courses from life drawing, ceramics and jewellery making to name but a few. There’s a shop too, stocking a lovely range of cards and artwork.

McNair

McNair shirts are keeping the textile tradition alive in Slatihwaite. As they say they are “proper made in Yorkshire”. These quality shirts are handmade from scratch by the same person who signs your shirt when they are done, how great is that!? They are shirts that will last you a lifetime.

The Green Valley Grocer

Has been in the heart of Slaithwaite for 10 years now. It sells fresh local produce that can’t be beaten and they also do a great veggie box delivery scheme - hitting those 5 a day goals much easier. I like to buy my natural soaps and shampoo bars here, and get my washing up and fabric softener refills too, saving on plastic waste.

The Handmade Bakery

The Handmade Bakery is a community supported artisan bakery, owned and run by their members. It consists of a flourishing bakery producing 2000 loaves of real bread and patistserie each week, they really are to die for. Its a cafe too, where you can sit and have the best almond croissant in Yorkshire in a modern open plan space where you can watch all the baking action going on in the kitchen.

The Hardware Co

Friendly and great for all things hardware. Drop into the village to see if they stock it in here before you click online, they’ll probably be cheaper and it’ll make you feel super supporting an indy.

Cobweb Antiques

This place is a delight, it has an eclectic mix of antiques, gifts, cards and furniture over three floors. Great for unusual cards and presents.

The Gallery at Slaithwaite

This large converted mill is full of art, gifts, jewellery, and cards all from local artists. Check out my talented sister Kerry Dyson Jewellery who is stocked in here too.

Rumpus Burger

This great burger joint breeds it own longhorn cattle on their farm in Slaithwaite. The restaurant is small but perfectly formed and has a great outside seating area in summer. The burgers are so tasty and give all other Huddersfield burger restaurants a run for their money. The classic longhorn burger is my go too with just the right burger to bun and salad ratio.

I’m sure there are many more amazing places that I have yet to discover, where do you like to go in Slawit?

Why not pay a visit before or after your acupuncture appointment at Points. It makes a great trip out so come along to Slaithwaite and have a wander, there is so much to do and see. I hope you love it as much as I do.
