Practitioner to Patient

On the first of June this year I broke my ankle. It wasn’t a bad fall, just a slip coming down a step, but the next few month’s of being a patient for a change were very challenging, where I had to learn patience.

I had to have an operation and now have plates and screws in my ankle, which I am still making peace with. In fact when I look back on my healing journey now it it’s quite a blur. I was very lucky to have such a wonderful husband, family and friend’s that rallied around me. They kept the boredom from driving me insane when I couldn’t really leave my bedroom for two weeks. It really did mean the world to me. Thanks all! You know who you are.

Pain wise I think I was very lucky too, as I was only on painkillers for the first few weeks cutting them down on a daily basis. I was able to do this because I was treating myself with acupuncture every other day, and I could see the healing taking place before my very eyes. The human body is amazing.

I also think the fact that I had core strength from my weekly yoga sessions really helped too, as it was a good base for my healing to take place. And when my good leg and arms had to step up to walk with crutches they were ready for the challenge.

When I went back for my two month check up at the hospital they said that the ankle had an amazing range of movement, so much so I didn’t need to see a physio. Phew!

Don’t get me wrong I had a few dark days, but on the whole I tried to stay positive and I think that helped the healing process too.

I would also like to say a big thank you to all my patients who came to see me when conditions were not ideal as I was hopping around on crutches and wizzing around on a wheelie chair during treatments. It was quite a sight!

I am now back doing the things I really missed such as yoga at Om and walking to work, which feels so good. My ankle is now doing great with just a few minor aches and pains if I over do it - learning more patience again...

This journey helped me understand what its like to be on the other side and to be the patient not the practitioner, and I think it was an important lesson for me.
